ABSTRACT

The growing importance of innovative work behavior (IWB) has now become indispensable serving as a critical determinant for the survival of organizations. Organizations including higher educational institutions, such as polytechnics endeavour to cultivate innovative work behavior within their workforce due to its elevated significance and value. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of ethical leadership on lecturers’ innovative work behavior. Specifically, this study also aimed to investigate the mediating effect of a proactive personality on the relationship of ethical leadership and innovative work behavior. This study employed a quantitative cross-sectional survey research design. The participants involved 172 lecturers from Malaysian Polytechnics in Penang, Kedah, and Perlis. This study used the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach to analyze the data. The findings show that ethical leadership did not influence lecturers’ IWB. However, a proactive personality mediated the relationship between ethical leadership and IWB. Hence, the management of the polytechnic should focus on employees’ proactive personalities. Implications and future studies are presented in the study.
